Applying to the Major

Transfer Students

Students applying to the University of Maryland from other institutions apply to the LEP through the general application to the University by indicating their major of interest. Successful completion of the gateway course grades, portfolio and GPA requirements does not guarantee admission to the Architecture (BS) as there are a limited number of seats in the major. The portfolio consists of work completed in ARCH200 as well as additional creative work, an essay, and a comprehensive evaluation of a students’ academic performance.

  • ARCH200 [Design Media and Representation I] with a minimum grade of B- or better
  • MATH120 [Elementary Calculus I] with a minimum grade of C- or better
  • PHYS121 [Fundamentals of Physics I] with a minimum grade of C- or better

A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the University of Maryland and all other institutions is required for internal and external transfer students.

The following guidelines pertain to the Architecture (BS) Limited Enrollment Program:

  • Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt and must be repeated.
  • Students may apply once to the Architecture (BS) LEP degree program.
  • Students who were directly admitted, and fail to meet the performance review criteria will be dismissed from the major and may not reapply.
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 after admission to an LEP. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the major.
  • Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal in writing to the individual LEP.
  • Students will take gateway courses enrolled as Letters and Sciences (LTSC) majors, before admission to the Architecture (BS) LEP.
